Visiting Professor with Prof. Dr. Ahmad Qablan from United Arab Emirates University (UAE)

On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Yogyakarta State University (UNY) held a Visiting Professor event with Prof. Dr. Ahmad Qablan from United Arab Emirates University (UAE). The event was attended by 25 students of the doctoral program (S3) Science Education and Chemistry Education FMIPA UNY. The activity which took place in Session Room 3, FMIPA UNY presented two main sessions, namely Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis, which provided an in-depth understanding of qualitative data collection and analysis techniques in scientific research. In addition, there was also a Sharing Session: Ph.D Program in UAE and Canada, where Prof. Qablan shared experiences and insights related to doctoral programs in the UAE and Canada, including the selection process, academic approach, and international cooperation opportunities.
In the first session, Prof. Qablan emphasized the importance of using a holistic approach in qualitative data collection to understand the context as a whole. She also introduced some innovative data analysis methods, such as coding, thematic analysis, and the use of research support software. In the second session, Prof. Qablan shared his personal experience as an international academic with a track record of study and research in the UAE and Canada. Participants were invited to understand the dynamics of doctoral-level education in the two countries, including differences in academic culture, research facilities, and opportunities for global collaboration. The participating students responded positively to this activity. One of the participants, Rifqi Rasis (doctoral student of Science Education), said that the material presented was very relevant and provided new insights, especially in conducting high-quality research at the international level. The event was closed with an interactive discussion, where participants could ask Prof. Qablan directly about various challenges and opportunities in research and doctoral studies abroad. This activity is expected to strengthen global insights and expand the academic network of FMIPA UNY at the international level.
