GUEST LECTURE BERSAMA DR. JANE’ O CONNOR DARI BRIMMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY

Wednesday, March 6, 2024, students of the science education doctoral program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences took part in a guest lecture in the field of qualitative research methods. The presentation of the material was delivered by Dr. Jane O’Connor, Deputy Director of the Center for the Study of Research and Practice in Education (CSPACE), BCU. Apart from Dr. Jane, the Guest Lecture was attended by researchers from Northeast Normal University China, Vietnam National University (VNU), Nguyen Tat Thanh University NTTU) Vietnam, HCMC University of Education Vietnam, London South Bank University. Presentation of material regarding qualitative research to provide in-depth insight to doctoral program students regarding qualitative approaches in scientific research.
Dr. Jane O'Connor presented material covering the definition and scope of qualitative research, the approach and philosophy behind qualitative research, qualitative data collection techniques, such as observation, interviews, and document analysis, and qualitative data analysis strategies, including theme selection, codification, and interpretation. After the presentation of the material, an open discussion session was held where participants asked questions directly to the professor regarding the topic that had been presented. This discussion aims to clarify the concepts that have been explained and provide participants with the opportunity to share their experiences and views about qualitative research. Rifqi Rasis a PhD student in Science Education explained one of the ongoing research. The research presented is related to preliminary studies in dissertation research. This guest lecture activity is a very valuable effort to enrich academic understanding and skills in the field of scientific research. It is hoped that this activity will be an inspiring first step to further explore qualitative research as a relevant approach in understanding the complexity of the phenomena that occur.
